If you love ordering a huge bowl of wonton soup when you hit your favorite Chinese restaurant, this recipe is for you. Using a frozen, store bought wontons trick, it comes together in just 30 minutes and is made all in one pot. Effortless and so tasty!
What is Wonton Soup?
Wonton Soup is probably already one of your go-to dishes when you order Chinese take out. If it’s not, get ready to fall in love. This soup is typically made with a light chicken-based broth and chock full of juicy dumplings and tender bok choy. For this recipe, we add some mushrooms because for more depth of flavor.
Frozen Wontons: I love using Trader Joe’s Chicken Cilantro Mini Wontons. If you don’t have one in your area, pick any dumpling from the grocery store or specialty Asian market.
The Components of this Wonton Soup Recipe
Every wonton soup is a little different, but each will likely have the following central, ingredients:
- Greens – Green onion and bok choy are crucial musts that elevate any wonton soup worth eating. You could also add in spinach, cilantro, broccoli or any other greens you like.
- Garlic – Fresh garlic adds a welcome taste and fragrance to your wonton soup.
- Mushrooms – While not every wonton soup calls for mushrooms, I believe they add a wonderful depth and earthiness. Shiitakes are my go-to, but feel free to use any fungi you like.
- Broth – Chicken is preferred, but feel free to use veggie or even beef broth.
- Wontons – You can use store bought wontons if you’re in a pinch for time. If you’re feeling ambitions make our gyoza recipe or pelmeni from scratch and substitute them for wontons.
- Seasoning – Highly recommend adding a bit of low-sodium soy sauce and pure sesame oil to the broth. It adds so much flavor!

- Add in the Veggies: Slice the bok choy into smaller pieces and toss it in the soup pot. Next, add in the mushrooms.

- Add in the Soy Sauce & Sesame Oil: Season the soup with soy sauce and sesame oil. Ladle up a bowl and enjoy!
3 Tips for the Tastiest Wonton Soup
A couple of handy tips will help you make the best, steaming bowl of wonton soup.
- Use low-sodium broth. Since you’ll add in soy sauce at the very end, you’ll want to use low-sodium chicken broth to ensure the soup doesn’t come out too salty.
- Wash the bok choy well. Bok choy is prone to having dirt stuck in between the leaves. Wash it thoroughly under cold water to make sure there’s no grime.
- Don’t overcook the wontons. Avoid overcooking the wontons, as they will turn super mushy. Once they float to the top, they’re ready to go!
Storing Leftovers
The awesome part about wonton soup is that the flavor just gets better and better as the broth marinates in itself. Store your soup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days. To reheat, place your soup in saucepan over medium-heat and stir every now and again until warmed through.

LindaMar 14, 2024 I love this soup- I’ve made it several times - all good. I added Miso to the broth because we like the taste. I also added spinach the last time- even better.
Natalya DrozhzhinMar 14, 2024 Extra veggies are always a good idea! Thanks for sharing Linda. 🙂
AnneJan 29, 2024 This is the same as a Skinnytaste recipe.
Whose is the original? Very good and very easy regardless. Used regular mushrooms due to the price of Shitake mushrooms and doubt it made a difference.Natalya DrozhzhinJan 30, 2024 Hey Anne, I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the soup! That's so interesting - I'll have to look up her recipe and compare. 🙂
KatieJan 24, 2024 Can I use low sodium beef broth instead of chicken? And is there room to toss in a few frozen uncooked shrimp?
Natalya DrozhzhinJan 25, 2024 Hey Katie, Feel free to use your broth of choice and shrimp! Extra protein is always a good idea! 🙂
KarenJan 17, 2024 Absolutely delicious. Easy to make and everyone loved it!

ValerieDec 9, 2023 I just made this. Excellent recipe. Next time I’m going to add chicken and snow peas! Thank You for such a great, and easy recipe.
Natalya DrozhzhinDec 11, 2023 That would be delicious! Enjoy!
YeseniaNov 10, 2023 Hi there. The recipe looks delicious and I can't wait to make it ! Question. I will be making the gyoza from your recipes and I wanted to know when is a good time to add to soup since they won't be frozen.
Natalya DrozhzhinNov 13, 2023 Hey Yesenia, I would add them around the same time you add the veggies. Enjoy!
AkchickOct 28, 2023 Beautifully made and delicious. Perfect dinner time soup. I would definitely make this as a starter for a service of eight people along with a stir fry or a Asian main dish.
Natalya DrozhzhinOct 29, 2023 Hey Akchick, Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
JackieOct 5, 2023 With all due respect, there is no way this is a "meal" for eight people. One eight ounce serving would be:
8 ounces of broth
1 ounce of mushrooms
1 half of a baby bok choy
Little more than a third of green onions
And ONLY 2 & a half wontons!!That is not dinner by any means! A little snack for toddlers perhaps, but definitely not dinner.
I just wish that recipe developers would be more honest with the serving size than worried about the "calories" or the "nutritional information" if, goodness forbid, it should go over the daily recommended allowance.
I pity the novice cook who is planning a dinner party for eight people & would like to make this. What a huge embarrassment that would be!!
Natalya DrozhzhinOct 6, 2023 Hi Jackie, Thanks for sharing your insight. I will look into the serving sizes.
JillboSep 24, 2023 I don’t have regular sesame oil. Can I use toasted sesame oil instead?
LouTOct 22, 2023 Hi there! You MUST use toasted sesame oil! Any asian recipe asking for sesame oil means toasted sesame oil. Raw sesame oil has such a mild flavor that you couldn't even taste it in a dish.
Natalya DrozhzhinOct 23, 2023 Great tip, thanks for sharing.
Natalya DrozhzhinSep 25, 2023 Hi Jillbo, That would work! Enjoy!
ClaudiaAug 8, 2023 I made the soup today and it was good. Although I didn’t find any wontons, I added beef dumplings and it was sooo good. I had to add more water because with the 32oz broth and 2 cups of water it wasn’t enough. I also added more soy sauce to add more flavor from losing it with more water since I didn’t had any more of the chicken broth.
Natalya DrozhzhinAug 8, 2023 Hi Claudia, The dumplings sound so good - what a great idea. Thanks for sharing your feedback!
LoriAug 1, 2023 Just made this soup this week, used spinach, mushrooms, scallions, sliced jalapeño, wontons and mini meatballs. Very good!
Natalya DrozhzhinAug 1, 2023 Hi Lori, Yum! This has me craving some soup! Thanks for sharing.
AnnieJun 25, 2023 So good! I added sirhacha sauce, frozen shrimp and a little fresh lime.
Natalya DrozhzhinJun 26, 2023 Hi Annie, Yum! So happy to hear you liked the soup.
CharryJun 21, 2023 Can I add uncooked prawns with this recipe?
Natalya DrozhzhinJun 21, 2023 Hi Charry, I haven't tried that but it sounds like a delicious addition! I think they will cook really fast so I'd recommend you add them in at the end. Please let us know how this turns out!
TamiApr 21, 2023 My 11yr old loved this recipe! So simple and so flavorful!
Natalya DrozhzhinApr 21, 2023 Hi Tami, I am so glad to hear that your kiddo loves this recipe. Thank you for sharing your feedback with me!! Enjoy!
Victoria HaynesMar 24, 2023 Currently making this. But using red chard instead. Book Choy not in season. Using coconut aminos instead of soy sauce as I’m diabetic.
Natalya DrozhzhinMar 24, 2023 Hi Victoria, thank you for sharing your process with me. It's going to turn out delicious! Enjoy!!
Jennifer NevinMar 19, 2023 I made this recipe and it’s the first time trying wonton soup. I made pork pelmeni dumplings but didn’t have the bok choy. I tell you what, delicious!! It was soo flavorful and just delicious! Thank you for the recipe 😊
Natalya DrozhzhinMar 20, 2023 Hi Jennifer, I am thrilled to hear that this recipe was a success! Thank you for sharing your feedback! Enjoy!
KaylaFeb 26, 2023 What is a serving size?
LouTOct 22, 2023 1 serving is ½ cup of broth, 2½ wontons and ½ bok choy per portion, which is clearly not a portion for a meal, not even for a kid. In reality, this recipe serves 4 light eaters. Still, it looks delicious!
Natalya DrozhzhinOct 23, 2023 Thank you for your feedback! Usually a serving is about 3/4-1 cup of food but I can see where you are coming from because most Asian soup places serve a giant bowl, which I love as well. Hope you get to try the recipe. 🙂
Natalya DrozhzhinFeb 27, 2023 Hi Kayla, this recipe makes 8 servings. Our calculator doesn't come up with an exact serving size number. I hope this helps. Enjoy!
LindaFeb 26, 2023 So delicious! Will definitely make this again! I was looking for soup with bok choy in it and your recipe came up. So quick and easy to make. Just what we wanted on a cold winter day. Thank you!!
Natalya DrozhzhinFeb 27, 2023 Hi Linda, I am so thrilled that you loved this recipe and that it was a success! Thank you for your feedback. Enjoy!
Edward PinsentFeb 8, 2023 Love the 'low sodium' options.. I've eaten WonTon soup that will shrink your tongue with the 2500mg of salt in there.. Messes with my stomach .. Thanks .. will try this ..
Natalya DrozhzhinFeb 9, 2023 Hi Edward, I hope you love it. It's such a good one. 🙂
NashidFeb 6, 2023 It's a pretty decent recipe. But I gotta admit , frozen wonton do not need no more than 5 mins to cook (trader Joe brand). Otherwise, I would have overcooked. Also, you only need a teaspoon of sesame oil unless it's a lite sesame oil. Overall, it's a good base recipe.
Natalya DrozhzhinFeb 6, 2023 Hi Nashid, I appreciate your input! Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback.
Malinda GronewoldJan 22, 2023 Beautiful and tasty recipe as it was easy to make. I added in a box of mushroom broth versa water to enhance the mushrooms flavor, and a cup of shredded carrots. I used Braggs Coconut Amino liquid as a substitute for soy sauce.
Natalya DrozhzhinJan 23, 2023 Hi Malinda, I am delighted to hear that you loved this recipe! The added mushrooms and carrots sound so tasty! Thank you for sharing your feedback. Enjoy!
KimberlySep 17, 2022 Hello I plan on making this recipe. Did you put a lid on your pot when simmering? Or, you left the pot open?
Natalya DrozhzhinSep 19, 2022 Hey Kimberly- I leave the pot open when simmering. Enjoy!
Crystal GarrettAug 20, 2022 Can you freeze the leftovers
Natalya DrozhzhinAug 20, 2022 I wouldn't recommend it, Crystal! The wontons will turn mushy. This soup is best enjoyed fresh!
AllisonJun 13, 2022 Do you have a recipe for making wonton? Or, are there ready made frozen wonton in the store?
Natalya DrozhzhinJun 13, 2022 Hi Allison- these are frozen, store bought wontons and this is what makes the soup come together so fast! I love the wonton options that Trader Joes has, but any brand of wonton will do!
sheranMar 11, 2022 Impossible to find won tons where i lit would be nice to have a recipe for homemade won tons.
NashidFeb 6, 2023 Walmart carries wonton
Natalya DrozhzhinMar 11, 2022 Hi Sheran- The wontons I use in this recipe are specifically from Trader Joes, they have a few yummy options there! Otherwise most stores would carry them in the frozen section. Thanks for your feedback!
SharonNov 12, 2022 They also have them at Costco
NJeanJan 8, 2022 32 oz broth and 2 cups water makes 8 servings? Doesn’t sound right.
Natalya DrozhzhinJan 8, 2022 You can definitely cut it down to four servings if you're serving it as an entree. Hope this helps!
Natalya DrozhzhinJan 6, 2022 Yay! That's great to hear, Laurie. I love those additions! I bet the fish sauce added such a nice depth of flavor. Happy New Year!
RobertaDec 3, 2021 I made this soup the other day and LOVED it! I did not want to pay the high price for shiitake mushrooms so I used large criminal mushrooms instead and I added U15 shrimp. DELICIOUS!
Natalya DrozhzhinDec 3, 2021 Hi Roberta - Thank you for the kind words! So happy that you loved it. You can totally swap out the mushrooms and I don't blame you - shiitake can cost an arm and a leg! The shrimp addition is something I'll have to try...
YuliyaMay 22, 2021 Per the instructions it seems like all three bok choy, wontons, and mushrooms are to be added at the same time. My wontons rose to the top after 4 minutes of "simmering" on medium/high heat so the "15 minutes or until they rise" is misleading.Trader Joe's package says to add them in the last 1-2 minutes of cooking.
Next time I would add the wontons after the bok choy and mushrooms had some time to simmer alone. My wontons ended up being really mushy.
Too much soy sauce/sesame oil as well. It completely overpowered and didn't have the gentle flavor that PF Chang's wonton soup has. Just my personal preference though.
I needed to add salt at the end so would opt for regularly salted chicken stock, especially if adding less soy sauce.
Natalya DrozhzhinMay 22, 2021 Hey Yuliya, thank you for all your feedback. I am sure it will help many people. If wontons are fully frozen they typically would take longer than a few minutes but if they do float to the top, you should go to the next step (which we did mention in the recipe). Soy sauce and sesame oil would be a preference thing because I personally add more to my bowl. Sorry, it didn't turn out the way you expected.
