1.

Introduction

Mages have three very well balanced PvE talent trees. This guide willdeal with the Fire talents. If you wish to learn more about the other specs, try our Arcane andFrost guides. Each Mage spec hastheir own strengths and weaknesses.

Fire Mages underwent a few changes in The Burning Crusade. Most importantis the change in the TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (1)Ignite mechanic, which is now a personaldebuff for every Mage. The new talents TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (2)Molten Fury,TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (3)Empowered Fireball and TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (4)Dragon's Breath are the otherkey changes in the Fire tree rework Blizzard has done. Molten Fury increasesyour damage done against targets with low health, which is excellent forbosses with high health. Empowered Fireball gives your Fireball more damagefrom the stat Spell Damage, and Dragon's Breath is a new and very powerfulfrontal cone AoE ability. TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (5)Playing with Fire andTBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (6)Pyromaniac are also two new damage increasing talents. You willlearn more about all these abilities in much greater detail in theFire Mage PvE Spells andFire Mage PvE Talents sections.

If you are looking to level a Mage, you can find our leveling guides below. You can level as either Arcane and Frost Mage, or you can simply go with theFire leveling spec.

Best Races for Fire Mage

The Burning Crusade lets Mages choose between the races BloodElf,Troll, and Undead if Horde. The Alliance offers youDraenei, Gnome, and Human.

3.1.

Blood Elf

Blood Elf is the new Horde race choice, players can choose. Their racialsare still quite good. Mana Tap and Arcane Torrent restore Mana and also grantthe Mage a 2 seconds AoE silence effect, which can be used as an emergencyCounterspell. The additional magic resistances decrease magic damage takenslightly and as arcane beings, Blood Elves have an increased Enchanting skill.

  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (17)Magic Resistance — Increases all resistances by 5.
  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (18)Arcane Affinity — Enchanting skill increased by 10.
  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (19)Arcane Torrent — Silences all mobs within 8 yards of you for 2 secondsand granting scaling Mana return based on your stacks of Mana Tap.
  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (20)Mana Tap — Steals Mana from a target granting you a buff that uponcasting Arcane Torrent will grant you Mana based on the amount of Mana Tapstacks you have (stacks up to 3).

3.2.

Troll

Trolls are the best PvE Horde race for Mages. The passive damage increase tobeasts is nice to have while leveling and for farming beasts, but the realdeal is the increased cast speed from Berserking. The more Health you havelost, the faster this ability lets you cast, up to a maximum of 30% fastercasting. Further, troll Mages are able to generate small amounts of Healthduring combat, an ability no other race has.

  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (21)Berserking — Increases your casting and attack speed by 10% to 30%.At full Health the speed increase is 10% with a greater effect up to 30% if youare badly hurt when you activate Berserking. Lasts 10 seconds.
  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (22)Beast Slaying — Damage dealt versus Beasts increased by 5%.
  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (23)Regeneration — Health regeneration rate increased by 10%. 10% oftotal Health regeneration may continue during combat.

3.3.

Undead

The racial traits of Undead are most the powerful in PvP combat, but alsohave niche uses in PvE. They can cancel Charm, Fear and Sleep effects or becomeimmune to them before these effects even apply. Together with Ice Block, thisis a very strong ability. The typical Undead hunger for fresh bodies lets themfeast on their enemies' corpses, restoring Health very quickly. Being able tobreathe 3 times longer underwater than any other race, the Undead Mage does notneed to fear from drowning while doing underwater farming or questing, andUndead are more resistant to Shadow damage.

  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (24)Will of the Forsaken — Provides immunity to Charm, Fear and Sleep whileactive. May also be used while already afflicted by Charm, Fear or Sleep. Lasts5 seconds.
  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (25)Cannibalize — When activated, regenerates 7% of total health every 2seconds for 10 seconds. Only works on Humanoid or Undead corpses within 5 yards.Any movement, action, or damage taken while Cannibalizing will cancel theeffect.
  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (26)Underwater Breathing — Underwater breath lasts 300% longer thannormal.
  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (27)Shadow Resistance — Shadow Resistance increased by 10.

3.4.

Draenei

Just as Undead, Draenei have a slightly higher resistance to Shadowspells. Their Gemcutting ability increases their Jewelcrafting skill. The twomost important racial traits are Inspiring Presence and Gift of the Naaru.Inspiring Presence increases the Spell Hit chance of players grouped withyou and Gift of the Naaru is a heal over time, that scales with your level, usually used in niche situations, such as healing while running away fromenemies.

  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (28)Shadow Resistance — Shadow Resistance increased by 10.
  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (29)Gemcutting — Jewelcrafting skill increased by 5.
  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (30)Inspiring Presence — Increases chance to hit with spells by 1% foryou and all party members within 30 yards.
  • TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (31)Gift of the Naaru — Gift of the Naaru is a heal that scales with yourlevel and will heal your target over the course of 15 seconds.

3.5.

Human

Perception is a very strong cooldown to detect any stealth class around you, giving you a massive advantage in PvP. The Human Spirit is verygood for Arcane Mages and can, in some situations, make Human the better choicefor Arcane Mages than Gnome (more about that in the Arcane Mage guide).Diplomacy is useful any time you do a reputation grind.

3.6.

Gnome

Just as they were in Classic, Gnomes are considered overall to be the bestrace for Alliance. Their Intellect boost from Expansive Mind is good for allthree Mage specs, especially for Arcane, and the Escape Artist is the best Mageracial trait for PvP, as it is instant in TBC on a low 1.75-minute cooldown. The extra Arcane Resistance trait helps in a few PvE situations, where Arcanedamage is coming in, such as tanking the Mage boss on the Illidari Council. The bonus to Engineering is just as handy as the other races' professionbonuses.

3.7.

Conclusion

For the Horde, Troll is clearly the best PvE Mage race, due toTBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (39)Berserking being the only viable racial trait. In PvP,Undead are king with TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (40)Will of the Forsaken andTBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (41)Cannibalize.

For the Alliance, in PvP, Gnomes are the best choice withTBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (42)Escape Artist. For PvE, the decision making is not as easy. Draeneis comewith the 1% Spell Hit racial for the whole group, which by itself isabsolutely phenomenal, however, it goes down to no value as soon as thereis a Shaman in your group, and generally most classes will beHit capped on trash mobs. So this racial basically is only useful on bosses, if youdo not have a Shaman in your group. As Intellect also increases the CriticalStrike chance, Gnomes are viable for all Mage specs. Arcane Mages, which will be on top of the food chain when it comes to Mage specs in TBC,benefit even more from the additional TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (43) Expansive Mind Intellect, as itis their main stat. However, if you play in a guild that chain pulls, not allowing you to drink, a bigger Mana pool will only mean you have to drinklonger, thus making TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (44)The Human Spirit the better option, especiallypaired with TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (45)Innervates andTBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (46)Improved Divine Spirit.

TLDR: For speedrunning as Arcane Mage with support, Human is the better PvErace, otherwise Gnome is.

Best Professions for Fire Mages

Engineering is a very potent profession. Explosives, such asTBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (47) Dense Dynamite and TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (48) Super Sapper Charge, are not subject to theAoE cap and can be woven into your rotation. Engineering also offers access tovarious versions of the TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (49) Destruction Holo-gogs throughout the expansionand the TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (50) Zapthrottle Mote Extractor, used for farming motes.

Enchanting offers TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (51) Enchant Ring - Spellpower enchants foryour rings, which is considered to be very strong. These enchants stop workingif you drop Enchanting and can only be applied to your own rings. Anotherbenefit from Enchanting is, that you can TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (52)Disenchant most green, blueand epic quality gear items, which can be used for other enchants or can besold. This, however, requires your Enchanting skill to be leveled. Follow ourTBC Enchanting guide if you want to learn more aboutthe Enchanting profession.

Tailoring gives access to several very strong Tailoring itemsand set bonuses. At Tailoring level 350, wearing both TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (53) Spellstrike Hoodand TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (54) Spellstrike Pants will give your spells a 5% chance to increaseyour Spell Damage by 92 for 10 seconds. TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (55)Fireball, your main spellhas a high Spell Damage scaling, so it will benefit even more from this setbonus.

Specializing in TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (56)Spellfire Tailoring is possible at Tailoring 300.Spellfire Tailoring is required to wear the Spellfire set that consists ofTBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (57) Spellfire Robe, TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (58) Spellfire Gloves and TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (59) Spellfire Belt. The 3-set bonus of the Spellfire set will give you 7% of your Intellect asSpell Damage. The whole Spellfire set has very high Fire damage.

Another bonus of TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (60)Spellfire Tailoring is that, whenever crafting aTBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (61) Spellcloth, Spellfire specialized tailors will get two instead of oneTBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (62) Spellcloth. Spellcloth is used to craft both, the Spellstrike andSpellfire set.

At Tailoring level 375, players with exalted reputation withAldor, can create the best legs enchant for healers,TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (63) Golden Spellthread. Players exalted with Scryers can makethe best caster legs enchant TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (64) Runic Spellthread. Three other, verysought after Tailoring crafts are TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (65) Girdle of Ruination,TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (66) Cloak of the Black Void and TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (67) Bracers of Havok. These items canbe worn but also be sold to other players, making Tailoring a very convenientprofession not only for PvE purposes, but also for gold making.

Leatherworking needs to be mentioned, as Leatherworkers canmake different drums with beneficial effects for 30 seconds. However,in TBC Classic, players receive a TBC Classic Fire Mage Guide (68)Tinnitus debuff whenever they benefitfrom a drum effect. This is a 2-minute duration effect, that prevents you fromgetting another drum effect. This debuff was not in the game originally, and wasrecently added by Blizzard. It greatly decreases the value of drums and thereforeLeatherworking.
